Frequently asked questions
Tankless Water heater
1. Difference between Tankless water heater and storage or instant water heaters?
Instant water heaters and tankless water heaters are different products, don’t get confused between these two. Instant water heaters are nothing but small storage water heaters between 1-6 liters and they do not provide continuous hot water instantly.
Below table will show you the difference between storage and tankless water heaters.
2. Where can one install a Tankless water heater ?
– Tankless water heaters for bathroom can be installed inside or outside the shower area and are suitable for small and medium showers in the bathroom and for kitchen use.
– They can be installed at any height as long as there is the requisite minimum pressure of 1 bar which is necessary for the geyser to operate and result in adequate shower performance.
– Tankless Water Heaters should be installed vertically only and as recommended/shown in the installation/user manual and/or advised by authorised technician.
– Small & compact Tankless water heaters for kitchen can be installed under kitchen sink and is also ideal for powder rooms and dining areas
3. Are there any specific plumbing , electrical and pressure requirements to install and operate these heaters ?
– Plumbing requirements
Yes, the geyser has specific plumbing requirements due to its design and needs to be installed by means of a template or by an approved authorised technician– Electrical requirements
– Products are 1 phase – therefore it is important to know what phase connection is available in the target/customer building/residence
– Yes, the wiring for Tankless Water Heaters has specific requirements:
– The wiring has to be done directly from the geyser to the distribution board (DB)
– The wire thickness and the circuit breaker capacity will depend on the rated power capacity of the geyser – see customer and technical service or product info sheet for more information– Pressure requirements
– Minimum pressure of 1 bar is needed to activate units which represent inflow rates of water of around 2 litres of water depending on the pipe thickness4. Can one tankless water heater be used for two bathrooms ?
Theoretically the answer is Yes, if the distances between bathrooms are not significant, however, a higher capacity unit must be recommended and the risk of lower flow rate exists if the showers are on at the exact same time. At the moment we only have tankless water heaters for small and medium showers and for kitchen faucets so sharing the same between two bathrooms is not advised.
5. Can tankless water heaters be used as backup for Solar water heaters?
Yes, tankless water heaters can be used as backup for solar water heaters. Its best backup for solar water heaters since it gets activated on flow of water and only activates if the set temperature from the solar water heater is not achieved and provides instant backup and energy saving at the same time.
6. Does Zanskar tankless water heaters are BEE star and ISI marked?
No, Zanksra does not have any Indian BEE energy rating as there is no standard rating currently for tankless water heaters. Tankless water heaters do not require BIS /ISI rating.
Zanskar tankless water heaters are internationally certified and are compliance with CE , ERP A Rating and IEC ( European Norms) on which Indian standards are based upon. So no compromise on safety and energy.
7. What is the availability of spare parts ?
Spare parts are readily available at our service centre. There is a comprehensive warranty of 2 years with Zanskar products.
8. How tankless water heaters save more energy compared to storage water heaters ?
– Lack of water storage avoids expensive heat losses or zero standby losses which resulting in more energy saving
– Water heating happens only when the hot water tap is turned and stops immediately once the tap is turned off. Hence energy is saved since there is no heating and reheating while the water is not being used.
– Energy consumption is based on the delta t temperature desired / set less ambient temperature so excess heating does not happen.
– Due to less salt deposition on its heating element the heating is more efficient compared to storage and hence less energy consumption is required
9. Are Tankless water heaters suitable for Hard water ?
– Zanskar tankless water heaters are highly resistant to hard water due to patented heating modules in stainless steel and nickel -chromium heating elements for efficient heating.
– Further Zanskar tankless water heaters have temperature control and do not heat water more than 60 degrees hence calcification which occurs at higher temperatures of 70-80- degrees does not happen as compared to storage. However, if the tds/hardness of water is above 100 we recommend either a scale inhibition /filtration system or water softener products for the whole house or bathroom. This will increase the life of all fittings and appliances, not only the water heater. 3M scale inhibition systems available in the market are highly recommended.
10. What happens if overtank is empty and the tankless water heater is on ?
The tankless water heater will not switch on without flow of water.
11. Can a tankless water heater be kept on a loft and does it require ventilation ?
The tankless water heater does not require any ventilation; however it should preferably be installed in an area where it can be reached easily so that the temperature and other settings can be changed when needed.
12. Why is direct wiring to DB is required?
Tankless water heater’s power supply should be independent to avoid power distribution /sharing with other household appliances as the rated power of tankless water heater is higher than most of the appliances in house.
13. If one has 4 tankless water heaters in 4 bathrooms and all are on at the same time, will there be high load consumption ?
The load consumption depends on the usage pattern and flow rate which will be different for each household. Also the difference would be the same if you had 4 storage heaters on at the same time.
14. Can you install a single phase unit if a three phase connection is available ?
Yes you can, however wherever there is a 1 phase connection you cannot put a 3 phase heater.
15. Does a tankless water heater require regular maintenance?
Minimal easy maintenance is required.
16. Why 4-6 sq mm wire required normally 2.5 sq mm wires are used?
Higher capacity wires are required to carry higher voltage due to higher capacity of the water heaters.
